Okay, okay - it’s technically still fall, but it sure feels like winter to me! Especially with all the holiday preprations and events happening. Even though I did a hefty batch of tarot readings this week there weren’t any big repeat cards - it seems like there’s a lot of diverse possibilities at work these days and, hey, I’ll take it!

My daily ritual is to read in the early morning while sipping my coffee, enjoying the last hour of darkness before the sunrise. My latest book has been a nice moody match to this quiet time: The Witch of Lime Street: Seance, Seduction, and Houdini in the Spirit World by David Jaher.
It’s a fascinating romp through the heady period post WWI when the Spiritualist movement was being embraced by eminent figures such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (he legit went on a promotion tour across the states talking about spirit communication!) and questioned heartily by others, most notably Harry Houdini. It’s an immersive and well-paced work on historical nonfiction similar to The Devil in the White City and I highly recommend it.

Weekend Send-Off: Cozy Times
Well, it’s cold here at last! Unfortunately, it’s been raining constantly, too. After three cloudy and damp days spent hunched over my computer putting the finishing touches on the updated Year Ahead Readings I felt like the tech version of Gollum. Seeing the sun today has been deeply enlivening and I’m hoping to spend some time taking in the fresh air and putting my garden to bed.
Though I have to admit I did have a blast adding some more magic to these readings. I have a special place in my heart for making artsy PDF booklets and readings (just ask my tarot students! I think my Tarot Basics class book is 30+ pages…) Amidst all that magic, I did have some time for tarot-related explorations, such as…

Benebell Wen’s Experience of Creating and Publishing a Tarot Deck - “Behind the Scenes of the Glamorous Deck Collector”
I love Benebell Wen’s unvarnished explorations of being a metaphysical practitioner. Her site is full of amazingly frank and helpful resources - spreasheets on how to make a tarot business work, legal insights, and now the realities of creating your own deck.
I’m sure many of us have casually mentioned creating our own deck and even more of us have produced indie or self-published tarot or oracle cards. Well, now we have a much better picture of what it looks like behind the scenes. Spoiler alert: it’s a lot of work!
Asali Earthwork’s Thoughts on Court Cards
We had so many courts pop up in our collective reading at Tarot Club last night that it was such a pleasure to stumble upon this nice overview today. Courts can be the trickiest to learn since they open us up to questions rather than answering them, but this refreshingly straightforward investigation should be helpful to anyone trying to navigate these sixteen cards.
Repeat Tarot Card - Three of Cups
More than just this week, this card has been all over my readings for over two months now. Not that I’m complaining; its jovial and community oriented tone is always welcome (and has some complex facets to boot.)
Most fascinatingly, it appeared in a reading at a party a few weeks ago. Instead of the usual questions about love or career, the querent wanted to know about the political situation in the U.S. You know, light party fare! This appeared to show what we can do to be more involved: work together and show up in-person in our communities to lift each other up. Now that I can get behind.

After following Sarah Gottesdiener on instagram for ages, I was delighted to see her launch a podcast on magic with Amanda Yates Garcia. Strange Magic approaches tarot and other practices from an intersectional feminist lens and has been featuring interesting episodes on each of the Major Arcana cards. Definitely worth checking out if you need another tarot podcast in your life.
Outside of the woo-sphere, I’ve been really enjoying the show Homecoming with Julia Roberts. I was NOT expecting such a tense and artful show full of oldschool cinematography techniques! It’s a visiaul treat and easily digestible with 30-minute episdoes.
And, yes, I have picked up another depressing book, but it is truly and deeply amazing - The Unwomanly Face of War: An Oral History of Women in World War II by Svetlana Alexeivich.

It’s always nice to see positive mentions of witchcraft, metaphysical practices, and paganism in the news, so this feature by The Daily Tarheel is an all-around joy. And although the comment section isn’t the kindest, I did get a chuckle out of the grab-bag of defensive responses!

For some reason whenever I go to the library I pick up a bunch of intense books. Rarely do I come home with something lighthearted and simple (though I could probably use it!). Case in point: this week I checked out The Lucifer Effect by creator of the Stanford prison experiment, Philip Zimbardo (it’s amazing) and Sabrina, the latest graphic novel by Nick Drnaso.
I knew nothing about Sabrina going in and devoured it in one sitting. Perhaps foolishly, I assumed it’d be at least somewhat happy (there’s flowers on the back!) but, no. It’s a riveting and devastating look into our current relationship to truth, hardship, and social media while being uniquely and utterly itself. I highly recommend it to any graphic novel fans out there or anyone looking for an insightful and artistic take on our modern times. Though maybe not for general uplift an merriment ;)

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge Halloween fanatic. In recent years, however, I’ve fallen off the wagon of making epic costumes. Some highlights from my glory days: going as a shrimp tempura roll, a toaster (very impractical for dancing), and Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle.
But this year is a return to form! After months of ebay searching I finally found the perfect dress for my Beetlejuice-themed costume. I’m going as Lydia Deetz in the wedding scene, heinous 80s red dress and all. It feels wonderful playing with costumes again. There’s something so magical about the outer and inner transformations that happen when we change our appearance.

I find that seeing the decks in person and handling them is the quickest way to see if they resonate with you. Got a good laugh out of this piece from The New Yorker - “This is Not a Drill: Mercury is in Retrograde.” Who can resist a little healthy joking around everyone’s favorite-to-bemoan astrological event?

The Lovers has appeared in a few profound readings this week, pointing to a lot of challenging and rewarding choices along with some good old fashioned romance.

It’s that time of the year where I re-watch my favorite animated series, Over the Garden Wall. It’s a magical story of two brothers who get lost in the woods and references all sorts of famous illustrators. Plus, I have a feeling you could view it as a bit of a Fool’s journey…
I’ve been reading a fascinating book on hallucinations called…wait for it… Hallucinations by the wonderful and inimitable Oliver Sacks. It’s been fascinating getting a neurological perspective on a subject that’s so fraught and, interestingly, tied to the spiritual community whether it’s through ecstatic visions or the use of hallucinogens. I’m especially looking forward to the next chapter on “Phantoms, shadows, and sensory ghosts”!

Well, my peaches, I’m sorry for the unexplained Weekned Send-Off hiatus. Things have been wild around here. Lots of fall transitions and life changes, the biggest being that I got married several weeks ago to my wonderful partner of three years. We had our ceremony at the house (I still have the paper lanterns hanging in my studio) and have been basking in the glow of being newlyweds and the best season of all: fall.

Tarot Discoveries - All The Books
My tarot reading list has been growing exponentially as of late. I just finished the wonderful Tarot Beyond the Basics by Anthony Louis (excellent for anyone looking to dive deeper into numerology, astrology, and elemental correspondences) and am dying to get my paws on a copy of T. Susan Chang’s new book Tarot Correspondences. I seem to go through periods of deep practice followed by an insatiable desire to read, so it’s back to the books for me! If only my library stocked more tarot books…
Blog Magic - Real Witches
After doing a lovely interview about my life as a witch and “origin story” the other day I found myself pondering the many ways people engage with witchcraft and its archetypes. Of course, the wonderful Brianna Saussy has something wise to contribute. Her recent post “Will the Real Witches Please Stand Up” is thought-provoking and nuanced take on witchcraft’s recent surge in internet popularity.
Repeat Tarot Card - Six of Pentacles
I think this card popped up at least six times (!) yesterday. First, in all my client readings and then in many of the reading swaps at Tarot Club last night. It was fascinating to see this card illustrated in everyone’s decks. From the classic “wealthy man bequeathing coins to beggars” version in the RWS to a joyous sense of collaboration and craft in another indie deck, the Six of Pentacles clearly has a lot to tell us about how we position ourselves when giving and receiving.

I’m a huge horror fan and have been taking serious advantage of this Halloween season. Some favorite movies I’ve been enjoying are Suspiria (the original with the amazing score by Goblin), Carnival of Souls, and the wonderful collection of ghost stories by M.R. James.
In the tarotsphere, I’ve been enjoying the new podcast Strange Magic by Sarah Faith Gottesdiener and Amanda Yates Garcia. It’s hosts are lovely, super-accomplished readers who bring a refreshing modern take to the subject. And I just got my hands on a copy of Creative Tarot by Jessa Crispin. I’ll be reporting back later when I finish it!

I love listening to tarot podcasts while I bop around the house and yesterday I put on the first episode of Fortune's Wheelhouse while color coding my closet (yes, I am one of those people.) For those of you looking to dive into the esoteric meanings and correspondences behind the cards, this is the podcast for you! Touching on topics from astrology to Kabbalah to Crowley and much, much more, this podcast is hosted by two very knowledgeable readers and will give you more than enough detail behind the cards and their symbols!
Woo Drama - Pinrose's "Starter Witch Kits"
Oo wee, did people get up in arms over these on Instagram! Sephora announced the forthcoming fragrance kit - complete with a tarot deck, bundle of white sage, and rose quartz crystal - this week and let's just say it was not recieved well. (This article from The Wild Hunt gives a good rundown of the whole fiasco.) Pinrose has since cancelled the release of the kit in response to the backlash.

I've gotten back into my personal ritual of waking up before dawn and reading before the sun rises. It's my way of stretching out time and feeling connected to myself. Just this morning I started an irresistible and amazing book on octopuses (yes, that is actually the correct plural form of the word! It derives from Greek, not Latin, in case you were wondering ;) Written by naturalist Sy Montgomery, it's called The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonders of Consciousness.

Fall is my favorite season and I'm feeling so invigorated by the small changes creeping into our still-hot North Carolina home. The dragonflies are buzzing everywhere, leaves are juuuust starting to change, and some white cranes even made a quick stopover in our pond. I feel a little bit like an intrepid squirrel running around collecting acorns for the winter.
Fall is my favorite season and I'm feeling so invigorated by the small changes creeping into our still-hot North Carolina home. The dragonflies are buzzing everywhere, leaves are juuuust starting to change, and some white cranes even made a quick stopover in our pond. I feel a little bit like an intrepid squirrel running around collecting acorns for the winter.
And there's a lot to prepare for! I'm getting married in three weeks, it's almost October aka Halloween - the busiest time of the year for a tarot reader, and I'm redesigning my website. I'm always all ears when tarot great Mary K. Greer has anything to say on tarot so when she posted about this spread from Jean-Claude Flournoy I got very excited. This spread uses all of the Major Arcana and seems to be very comprehensive, indeed! I'll be trying out for myself as a treat this weekend.
Beautiful Words - The King of Cups
I loved this piece by Sabrina Scott at Little Red Tarot: "Public feelings & dark days with the King of Cups." It's a beautiful meditation on the power of rethinking "mastery" and feeling our emotions freely.
Repeat Tarot Card - The Lovers
The Lovers has been popping up in its more complex iteration. What does it mean to embody love and how to we hold space for our individual selves while being in relationships with others? It has me thinking a lot about this often wished for experience and the complications that can spring from its reality.

I'm back from a rejuvenating vacation and happy to be blogging again! Though in honesty, it's quite the transition going from leisurely beach walks to the ins-and-outs of my work schedule. I've been talking with so many people about the healing magic of being near the ocean. Durham, for all its warmth and wonder, isn't quite close enough for my tastes, so being at my family's home in Cape Cod was a huge pleasure.
I'm back from a rejuvenating vacation and happy to be blogging again! Though in honesty, it's quite the transition going from leisurely beach walks to the ins-and-outs of my work schedule. I've been talking with so many people about the healing magic of being near the ocean. Durham, for all its warmth and wonder, isn't quite close enough for my tastes, so being at my family's home in Cape Cod was a huge pleasure.
And yet it's also incredibly energizing to be diving back into the tarot world. I have so many plans that I'm cooking up: changes to this website as well as new offerings and events for the fall. It's a lot to wrangle, but loving what you do is a huge help.

Kitchen Delights - Fettuccine and Clams
One of my favorite things to do in Cape Cod is clamming. Armed with special rakes and wire baskets, you wade out during low tide and comb the sand feeling for hidden mollusks. It's meditative, peaceful, and oh so easy. Plus, you get to come home sunswept, salty, and armed with a delicious catch for dinner.
The day before we left I went out during an extremely low tide and filled a basket with my father, who also happens to be the Deputy Shellfish Warden (the post comes with a badge and very jazzy hat!). He packed the clams safely in a cooler for my drive down South and I cooked them up with fettuccine for an epic clam dinner with friends. Is anything better? I've linked to a recipe from Smitten Kitchen, but you really can't go wrong with clams, onions, wine, butter, and lots of chili flakes.
Why Not? - Beach Tarot
One of my treasured beach rituals is doing surprising things while basking in the sun. I usually eschew zippy beach reads for heavy Russian novels (what can I say, I love contrast!) and even bring my tarot cards for some quick personal readings. My Rider-Waite-Smith in a tin works especially well. Just make sure you're vigilant or they'll get blown away by the sea breeze...

Now here's a card I love to see! The Two of Pentacles was all over the place this past week. A wondeful depiction of juggling work and projects with aplomb, this card shows that we've been on our toes and loving every moment of it.

There's nothing like a long drive to get deep into podcasts and audio books. I was so engrossed with the true crime podcast West Cork that I hardly noticed my travels from D.C. through New Jersey - high praise, indeed!
I've also been listening to the audiobook version of the David Lynch biography-autobiography hybrid, Room to Dream. It's fascinatingly structured with one chapter by a biographer followed by a segment written (and in this version narrated) by Lynch himself.

If there's one thing I've learned about writing these posts it's my inability to realize when it's really, truly Friday. After tidying up from my last client of the day, I found myself dreamily contemplating what to read while folding laundry. Then it hit me - I'm not quite done with my day yet!

If there's one thing I've learned about writing these posts it's my inability to realize when it's really, truly Friday. After tidying up from my last client of the day, I found myself dreamily contemplating what to read while folding laundry. Then it hit me - I'm not quite done with my day yet!
Though writing these posts doesn't feel a lot like work. There's something soothing about recapping events and drawing together a list of what's been inspiring and interesting. Even when, in this case, my week was decidedly strange and disjointed.
As in most situations, I'm going to squarely place this on the recent celestial happenings. It doesn't help that it's been dramatically soggy here in Durham - when you add rain to the heat and humidity everything feels clouded, including my brain.
But when I'm in a dreamy, confused state the most normal things seem beautiful and mysterious. Cute mushrooms have sprung up by my driveway, reading seems cozier, and simple pleasures take on new meaning.

My friend emailed me this beautiful piece by Jetti Allen on Medium. Seeing people's experiences with tarot is so horizon-expanding and affirming. I agree with so many of Allen's insights, particularly around the complex and joyous meanings of the cards. Classic Cheer-Me-Up - Celery Man
There's been some rough patches this week that have had me reaching back to my old faithful, spirit-lifting resources. Aside from gazing with adoration at my beautifully organized spice cabinet, this video from the Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! is my go-to for true, uncomplicated happiness. I'll never get tired of Paul Rudd and his ridiculous sequences ("Now Tayne I can get into!") I'd also love to know what your favorite goofy/weird videos are, so pleasure share below!
Repeat Tarot Card
The Three of Cups has been all over the place this week, showing us that support and community are readily available. Banding together and toasting to our successes, big and small, is beautiful in its simplicity and sets the stage for growth.
Listening, Reading, Watching
I rewatched one of my favorite movies, The Red Shoes, for the first time in years. It was even more beautiful than I remembered, especially the epic phatasmagoria of a dance scene in the middle. A reimagining of the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, a behind-the-scenes look at showbusiness, and a technicolor feast for the eyes? No wonder why I love it so!
Musically-speaking, I've been revisiting my favorite road trip songs in preparation for my long journey to visit my family on Cape Cod on Monday. On the top of the list? King of the Road by my favorite wild and wacky songwriter, Roger Miller.
